Start With Why (Not that one)

Why customers don't care about your mission, and what they really want to know
There is a popular phrase in the marketing world: "Start with why." Simon Sinek made it famous. But here is the thing most business owners need to understand. That kind of "why" does not matter to your customer.
Unless you are a nonprofit, your customer already assumes your business exists to make money. Telling them your purpose is to inspire or to uplift or to connect people? They see right through that. In today's world, most of your audience is skeptical. They do not buy into vague, lofty mission statements that sound more like slogans than substance.
So what kind of "why" should you start with?
The Real Why: Why Should I Buy From You?
That is the real question your customer is asking.
Why should I pick you over the other options?
Why is your offer better than doing nothing at all?
Why should I spend my money, my time, or my trust with you?
This is the kind of "why" that should drive your marketing strategy. It is not about your personal story. It is not about your dreams. It is about your customer and their needs, their problems, and their decision-making process.
If you cannot answer the question "Why you?" then all of your marketing content is just noise. You might attract a few people through word of mouth. Friends and family may support you. Maybe you even catch a few referrals. But that is not growth. That is not scale. And it is not sustainable.
Your Marketing Strategy Starts Here
When we build a strategy for a business at Round 2 It Marketing, one of the first things we ask is: what is your reason why? Not your passion. Not your origin story.
We want to know:
- Why should your ideal customer choose you?
- What do you do better than your competitors?
- What need or want do you fulfill?
- What problem do you solve?
Your answers to those questions form the foundation for every piece of marketing content you create. From your homepage copy to your social media videos to your email campaigns. If you are not leading with a clear, customer-centric answer to "why you," you are likely just shouting into the void.
People Are Selfish (And That's Okay)
People do not care why you started your business. They care about themselves. They are selfish. We all are. When someone lands on your website or watches your video, they are silently asking:
- What is in this for me?
- Can this help me?
- Does this make my life easier, better, cheaper, or faster?
They are looking for someone who understands their problem and offers a believable solution. That is your job. Your marketing has to answer that question over and over in different ways, across different platforms, in different formats.
If it does not, you are just relying on hope.
And as we always say here at Round 2 It Marketing, hope is not a strategy.
The Bottom Line
You need to answer one question clearly and consistently in your marketing:
Why should someone work with you?
If you cannot answer that, no one else will either.
Focus your strategy on the real why. Make sure every message, every headline, and every piece of content reinforces it.
If you're tired of marketing that feels like guessing, we help businesses build strategies that connect with the right people and actually drive growth.
Let's start by finding your real why.
